I never thought my second post would come so soon! Today, we will be visiting the Ernest and Primrose Evergreen, who just moved into Little Rock Brook to be close with their son, and his family.

Patchwork or Gardening? That seems to be on the agenda of Mr. and Mrs. Evergreen!

*GRANDFATHER Ernest Evergreen is Sylvania's great inventor. He locks himself away in his shed for days on end whenever he has an idea for some gadget or other. It must be said that not all Ernest's inventions have been a success and many of them don't seem to work at all!

*GRANDMOTHER Primrose Evergreen is Sylvania's "weather girl" with an instinct for what tomorrow's weather will bring. If her ears itch it will be sunny, if her toes itch it will rain, if her nose itches it will snow! Ernest jokes that if Primrose itches all over it will be because she's caught measles.

Ernest and Primrose settling into their new home with a refreshing cup of Jasmine Tea and some delights baked by Primrose herself!

A close up of breads and pastries. The ones on the right are Shaobing, flaky pastries with sweet filling such as mung beans or red beans!

Sylvanian Travels - JAPAN

Yes! Continuing as part of specials this week, today we are going look at my travels overseas and what better way to start with JAPAN! Japan, without a doubt is a Sylvanian mecca to any collector. However, it is not easy to navigate around without speaking Japanese. In the first of this five part mini-series, we'll be looking at Sylvanians in Tokyo in general.

Now, in this city of 12 million, searching for Sylvanians, like everything else can be a linguistic nightmare. So first things first, the basics. If you're planning to keep your Sylvanian hunting to Tokyo, the best option for you the Tokyo Metro Pass which is available at Narita International Airport's Arrival Hall. This pass covers all nine Tokyo Metro Lines but NOT the Toei Subway Lines or JR Lines For my week-long stay in Tokyo, I bought three of these two-day metro passes, which cost 980円(USD$18.60)

Even if you're not planning to limit your hunt to Tokyo, the pass is still pretty useful for travel to the usual tourist train in Tokyo or traveling back to your hotel after a day in Grinpa!

First stop, department stores. The one is the picture is Isetan, located in Shinjuku.

Most department stores in the city, stock Sylvanian Families. However, the range is only limited the current Japanese range and even so, there isn't anything special that you can't find elsewhere. My advice? Give these stores a miss unless you're really tight for time.

Next, on the list are the various Sylvanian Markets. The most convienient being the one at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara. Here you'll find a large variety of Sylvanians and I mean large. Sylvanian Markets also stock many Flair and UK Sylvanians as well. In addition to all this, the prices here are discounted, starting from 273円(About USD$3.30) for standing babies. Tax rebates are also available if you spend more than 10,000円.

Another place with mentioning is Toys R Us. Here, you'll find Toy R Us specials with Special figures included with buildings. For example, the Toys R Us version of the School Bus comes with a Chiffon Dog Driver and three students. Pretty good if you want to add a few special figures in your collection!

GETTING THERE:
Yodobashi Camera Akihabara
Take the Ginza Line of Tokyo Metro to Suehirocho(G-14) which is a five-minute walk from the store. Alternatively, take the JR Yamanote Line to Akihabara station, the Sylvanian Market is on 6/F.

Toys R Us (Sunshine 60)
Take the Marunouchi Line of Tokyo Metro to Ikebukuro (M-25), Sunshine City is a five minute walk away. Alternatively, take the Yurakucho Line to Higashi-Ikebukuro (Y-10)

Another great place to try out is Nakano Broadway in Nakano. Nakano, for many is anime lovers paradise! Here you'll find all sorts of toy stores as well as the flagship store of Mandarake, Japan's biggest store in dealing with all sorts of anime paraphernalia and toys. Depending on your luck, you may find Early 80's Epoch Sylvanian Families or figures of the current range. Many of the toy stores here also stock Sylvanian Families with some having back-dated stocks with retired items.

GETTING THERE:

Take the Tozai Line on the Tokyo Metro to Nakano (T-01) and walk though the covered shop alley (Seen in the second picture) to Nakano Broadway.

In our final place for this week, we'll look at Asakusa. Asakusa, is well-known for Sensoji Temple, the oldest temple in Tokyo as well as the world famous, Asahi Breweries. While there are not many toy stores selling Sylvanian Families here, its a great place to get a Sylvanian or two while soaking up the atmosphere of old Japan!

The shop I went to had a 10% discount on Sylvanian Families and hand wrapped the Acorn Mouse Brother I bought even though I didn't asked for it to be hand-wrapped.

GETTING THERE:
Take the Ginza Line to Asakusa (G-19) and walk towards the Sensoji Temple. The toy store I went to was on a side street branching out from the Nakamise Shopping Street (Seen in the picture above)

Next time on Sylvanian Travels, we'll look at the Sylvanian Kitchen at Kichijoji!

Special thanks to Renee on the advice about Yodobashi Camera!

In & Around Little Rock Creek: Lunch at the Brunch Stand!

Recently, a new fast food restaurant has opened in Little Rock Creek, attracting swarms of hungry Sylvanians. So what is their secret? Theodore Tear-Drop of the Little Rock Times finds out,

"Well, I make my specialties from only the freshest produce in Sylvania which I get delieved by Rocky Babblebrook's Sylvanian Market every morning at seven!", said Mr. Kenneth Furbanks, owner of the Brunch Stand.

"Cooking is our family's favourite pastime!" exclaimed Greta, Kenneth's daughter. "Today, I'm helping daddy cook the flap-jacks while Doug is in charge of the fries with Mother manning her famous Chilli on the stove!"

"After we send the kids to school, Kenny and I start laying out the food in time for the lunchtime crowd", said Emma, Kenneth's wife of 12 years!

"I love it! I come here everyday after school just for the pancakes", said a hungry Radish Dappledawn as he tucked into his piping hot serving of pancakes.
"Uncle Kenny always reserves me a seat everyday, he knows I absolutely adore his Strawberry ice cream!" giggled Andromeda Pettie.

More happy diners at the Brunch Stand!

Brunch Stand is located at the junction of Pebble Lane and Reed Avenue, next to the Little Rock Creek Town Hall.

Dentist Spencer Clearwater. A big big thanks to my old friend, Jacc for helping me get this one! As you can see he's already well in demand here in Little Rock Creek!

UL Tailbury Baby Boy. I wasn't really interested in getting the family life set that came with it so I was pretty pleased for my friend, Hayley had one up on ebay! Thanks Hayley!

US TOMY Rocky Babblebrook. I have to admit I had a penchant for him since I first saw him in last Sepetember. I just love Babblebrooks! Special Thanks to Countney of Sylvanian Heaven for the trade and the lovely illustration of him!

Hey Everyone! It has been quite awhile since I last updated and I'm really sorry about that. As you can see, I've been a bit busy with my latest Sylvanian project, which involves creating this little picnic diorama!

A few weeks, I decided get a couple of these Candy toys from my friend Kiki's, online shop BeHappy!. Now, if you don't already know she is selling a huge joblot of Candy toys at heavily discounted prices!

Anyway, I did recieved my package yesterday from Kiki's yesterday with the two sets, I bought!

White Bear's Ice Cream Shop #3 by Megahouse

French Treats and Snacks #3 by Rement

As for the display case, I got it for a mere SGD$2(About GBP£1) at a Japanese dollar store called Daiso. As for the green felt used for the bushes and grass, they purcashed from Spotlight, a craft shop. The little sign at the back and cooler box were handmade by me using ordinary Popsicle sticks, glue and paints.

A picnic fit for a king?

Finished product (With acrylic casing)

Finished product (Without acrylic casing)

Contrary to popular belief, one need not spend a small fortune or a great deal of time creating such dioramas. Below is my total expenditure for creating this diorama, which took me about a Saturday afternoon worth to complete, excluding the time waiting for the package!

Re-Ment and Megahouse Items - SGD$11.95 (Including Postage)
Display Case - SGD$2.00
Green Felt (One piece) - SGD$1.95
Popsicle Sticks - SGD$1.50 for a pack of 100
Babblebrook Rabbit and Evergreen Bear Figures - 298円 (About SGD$4.45)

Total Expenditure: SGD$21.85 (About GBP£10.70)

Sylvanian Travels - JAPAN (Part Two)

Hello everyone! Its time for a second edition of Sylvanian Travels! In this edition, we take you to the Sylvanian Kitchen restaurant in Japan!

The Sylvanian Kitchens are based on the actual Sylvanian Kitchen building in the Japanese range. As of May 2011, there are five Sylvanian Kitchens in Japan, one in Fukuoka, three in the Greater Tokyo area and one at the Sylvanian Families theme Park in Grinpa. The one you'll see in this post is the Sylvanian Kitchen in Kichijōji, Tokyo which closed earlier this year in February.

Sylvanian Kitchen at the Sylvanian Families Theme Park in Grinpa.

Sylvanian Kitchen at Kichijōji, Tokyo

Now, the food served at the restaurants are mostly a fusion of Western and Japanese cuisines with the usual Pizzas and Pastas along with Soups and Salads. However, I do recommend trying the Japanese Curry Rice (カレーライス) or the Naporitan(ナポリタン), both of which has its own unique and different taste from their conventional counterparts more commonly found elsewhere in the world! And for the hardcore Sylvanian fan, kids meals are also available in their usual kawaii kiddy portions!

The dinner menu at the restaurant.

Cold Corn Soup served at the restaurant!

Also, restaurants also differ from one another. For example, the Kitchen in Kichijōji was more of a typical dine-in while the Kitchen at Tokyo Bay is more of buffet style.

Of course, the food is just half of the experience you'll get at the Sylvanian Kitchen. While dining at the kitchen do keep out for the various displays and portraits that line the interior of the restaurant.

The Welcome mat at the entrance!

2010, marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sylvanian Kitchens since their interception in 2000.

A Sylvanian Kitchen within the Sylvanian Kitchen?

And dinner do go shopping the adjacent Sylvanian Market which sells both the JP range as well as the UK and US range. Up for grabs here are loads of special products from markers, keychains, stationery to loads of special JP Market specials!

Oodles and oodles of Sylvanian goodies!

Sylvanian Kitchen Pair
The Sylvanian Kitchen pair, available, only at the Sylvanian Kitchens and selected speciality stores, (2360円 each)

All in all, visiting the Sylvanian Kitchen is a great experience and definitely a must-go for any Sylvanian collector :) Budget wise, do plan about 1200-2000円 each person for meals and up to 10000円 for shopping! I, myself spent almost 10000円 in all.

This post dedicated to the countless number of victims of the recent Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. To all of our Japanese readers and friends, our thoughts are with you during this difficult and trying period.

The Buckleys have just moved to Little Rock Creek from Japan. One day, Maria Buckley decided to invite her cousins, Buck, Juniper and Bonnie for supper.

"Whatever shall I cook?" pondered Maria.

"I know! I shall make some Japanese treats from my native Nara!", quipped Maria.

And so, off she went to the kitchen to prepare supper...

Washing the greens!

Maria skillfully slicing the salmon with a sharp knife (Careful!) while Freddie shreds the daikon or Raddish.

Boiling the vegetables, because no one wants E. coli! :)

Frying the tempura to a crisp golden brown, yum!

Heres, Freddie rolling the sushi while Maria boils the Green Tea.

Sylvanian Travels - JAPAN (Part Three)

Hello Everyone! On this edition of Sylvanian Travels, we'll be traveling to Sylvanian Families Theme Park in Japan. Opened in 2004 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Sylvanian Families, the theme park is located in at the slopes of Mount Fuji near the town of Gotemba in Shizuoka prefecture, which is about an hour from Tokyo.

GETTING THERE

The scenic views from the bus!

While most people travel to Gotemba via the trains, a lesser known way to travel is by the bus. At 2900円 for both ways from Tokyo, the buses - run by the Odakyu Group is probably the cheapest way to travel to Gotemba. Tickets can be bought on the first floor of the Odakyu Department Store in Tokyo and the first bus leaves at 0700hrs from Shinjuku Station with subsequent buses leaving at half-an-hour intervals.

However, just a word of caution, do brace yourself for the typical evening rush-hour jam to Tokyo on the journey back!

Whatever the way to Gotemba, your ride will stop at the JR Gotemba Train Station. Here you can buy tickets to Grinpa, tickets cost 3600円 which also cover the 2280円 bus fare to and fro from Gotemba Station to the Theme Park.

A very important point to take note is, that outside the Summer period (July 17 to August 31) and during the Obon Festival, there is only ONE bus to and fro between Gotemba Station and Grinpa, leaving at 9.35am and arriving at 10.24am.* So it is very important that you make travel arrangements that will get you into Gotemba before 9am.

*There is a second bus arriving at 4.09pm, however the last bus leaving Grinpa leaves at 4.37pm.

Bus No. 4 goes to Grinpa Theme Park, home to the Sylvanian Families Theme Park!

Another potential pitfall is that only the 9.35 Bus 4 from Gotemba goes to Grinpa. Any subsequent Bus 4 before or after does not go to Grinpa and instead goes on a round trip around Gotemba town. Yours truly had to learn the hard way :(

Once you're on the bus, do keep a look-out for the lush mountain greenery that adorn the route, you won't be disappointed!

Breathtaking, don't you think?

GETTING AROUND

The Old Mill

Once in Grinpa, there are just loads to see and do. Depending on the seasons, various activities are always on offer, from Children rides in the Summer to Ice Skating in the late-Autumn and Winter. However, if these aren't really your thing, do visit the life-size models of Sylvanian houses, each filled with life-size furniture from actual Sylvanian sets :) And of course, what would be a Sylvanian theme park be without Sylvanians? Dotted around the theme park are many Sylvanians going around their "daily activities", do take a picture or two with them!

Admission to most of these attractions are free of charge, just remember to flash your ticket before entering!

The Town Square.

Dennis Huckleberry taking a little snooze!

The Chocolate Rabbits having a picnic by the hills!

The House on the Hill

Can you identify some of the Sylvanian furniture here?

The Woodland Lodge

The Sylvanian Kitchen

Today's Special!

And if you're hungry, do take time out to have a bite at theme park's two eating outlets. The Sylvanian Kitchen as mentioned in a previous post features fusion Japanese-Western cuisine, with a variety kiddy set meals on offer for Junior. The Bakery, located near the park's entrance features the all sorts of pastries and buns you would find in a typical Japanese bakery such Melon bread or Melon-pan(メロンパン) and Bread-crumbed sausage rolls.

A third eating outlet, the Cottonail Rabbit's Cafe is open during the Summer and features crepes and other cakes. Do set aside at least 1500円 per person for food :)

The Sylvanian Bakery!

Well, that's it for this edition of Sylvanian Travels. In our segment, we'll explore more of the theme park including the Sylvanian Museum and Sylvanian Market!

When the school rings in Little Rock Creek, some go exploring in lush forest of Sylvania, while go fishing by the Creek. But for some, the Little Rock Community Library is great place to spend a sleepy afternoon in the Creek.

The library is run by Hubert Huckleberry who also teaches English and Literature at St Francis School.

"It always great to see so many children spending their afternoon in the Library and its a great joy to see them grow up!" quipped Hubert before returning to his favourite Shakespearean novel, Hamlet!

Meanwhile, not too far away in the reading room, Scarlett Slydale was reading to her baby brother and sister, Linsey and Skitter.

"And the big red baloon flew far far away to the stars... never to be seen again!" said Scarlett in an animated voice.

Right next to Slydales, was none other Dennis Huckleberry, Little Rock Creek's biggest bookworm with his usual reads!

The library is also home to a large of comic books, heres Patch Forrestor catching up with the latest issue of Superman while his best pal, Gromwell Cottontail catches up on the latest Zzzs.

With so many books and genres to choose from, Willow Cottontail and Tiffany Golightly are just spoilt for choice!

Lost? Not to worry! Mr. Huckleberry is always there to help!

The library is also equipped with a study room. Here's Summer Evergreen taking time off Cheerleading Practice to tutor Lucy Honey-bear while her brother Logan Evergreen is working on his Physics Project with Birch Timbertop.

Dreaming the Sylvanian Dream

As I was growing up, I always envied some of my older collecting friends and how they could always get those darling Sylvanian Market Exclusives from Japan that all so many of us would love to have. But alas, as a kid, I couldn't afford them due the crazy shipping prices, the equally crazy exchange rate and for many other reasons. Neither were my parents that receptive to the idea of spending a small fortune just for the sake of toys. After all, would you trust your ten year old kid with such expensive toys? Thus, my collection was often limited to the ones I could get from the local store and during the many family holidays in Hong Kong and Bangkok to name a few.

Among the many figures, one stood out, the Doll of the Year 2003. As its name suggest, the doll was an exclusive piece by Epoch limited to a mere 100 pieces, each numbered. Often I dreamt about having her and how grand it would've been to be one of the hundred collectors to ever own her.

Fast-forward a few years to 2011, and here I'm still collecting Sylvanians, the passion never fades! And while I've managed to collect some of those Sylvanian Market exclusives, I still held out that childhood dream of getting the Doll of the Year 2003. Of course, by then she was even more hard to come by.

But then, just last week, a very good friend of mine, Hayley tipped me off about the Doll of the Year 2003 being sold off eBay. My heart skipped a beat, could this me the moment I had been waiting for since I was a kid?

As it turned out, it was really her! She was missing her base and she wasn't boxed but nevertheless it was her! I snapped her up and the rest is history!

Looking back, I think it was well worth the wait, I've been collecting for 12 years and what better way to mark it by finally fulfilling that long childhood dream of mine?

My new addition, The Doll of the Year 2003. Mine didn't came with her original base but I found a lovely piece of China that suited her just nice! Look out for a better picture coming up at Gallery soon!

This post is dedicated to my good friend in Sylvanian Collecting, Hayley! Thank You for helping me fulfill my childhood dream!

Yes, its been a busy two weeks for me with all the projects and schoolwork of the late! Nevertheless, its always heartening to see all of you visit my blog and commenting :)

I'm still in the mist my latest Sylvanian Project which involves cleaning the glass cabinet I have in my room to house more of my Sylvanians! Its a lot harder than it sounds but I hope to have it done by the end of next month.

In the meantime, do look out for an update in the Gallery sometime in the next two weeks as I have a few more new Sylvanians arriving in Little Rock Creek!

Hey Everyone! Its been a long time but I'm up and ready to start my Winter Updates! I'm in the mist of getting my new Cabinet for my critters, my December Collection Updates and Displays and a little surprise for my readers! So stay tune! :)

A Sylvanian App?!

That's right! Your eyes aren't deceiving you! In the latest innovation from Epoch, Epoch has developed a Sylvanian Families App for us Apple users! The app is available to all current Apple Products (Both ipads, Iphone3GS, Iphone4 & Iphone4s & Ipodtouch).

So the question remains, how much does this app lives up to the little critters we all so fondly love? We, at SylvanianHolics decided to find out,

Navigation-wise, the application is a breeze to navigate even for non-native Japanese users. As the app is mainly targeted for kids, most of the features such as the Mini-Game and Story are mostly kiddy-oriented. Nevertheless, there are still a few features that the Oldie Collector will like.

Biographies. Unlike UK/US Sylvanians, Japanese figures do not have names. They do however, have a large array of other titbits such as Birthdays & Horoscope. And With this app, its a breeze to find out everything. Currently, there are only four families featured, the Walnut Squirrels, Silk Cats, Chihuahuas & Chocolate Rabbits.

The app also features this fancy page which has info on the Buildings, Mini-Catalogue and the features found on the actual Sylvanian site, which can be launch on Safari

And to top it all, the app features a series of CMs! These commercials are usually seen on the Japanese Market and on the site. However, with this app they're available to anyone now :)

Overall, the app is a pretty useful thing especially if you're on the move and need to kill some time on the train. Although, it can be a bit dry to the Adult collector or the non-Japanese speaker. I'd give it a 3/5 rating.

If you're are thinking of getting this app however, you will have to create an Itunes account with the Japanese Itunes store as this app cannot be bought on any other store. The good thing however is, it is free!

More and More Dioramas!

A few months back, I wrote about making a Sylvanian-diorama with some of spare figures and re-ment accessories. Well, a few months on, it looks like I have really caught the diorama bug! To date, I have done five dioramas with a sixth one planned.

I got all of my display cases from Daiso, a Japanese Dollar Shop. At SGD$2 a piece, the cases are a steal! And with a little creativity, they're a cheap and lovely way to keep your Sylvanians in mint condition!

These are some of my Pre-Millennium JP Babblebrooks in their Baby Room! I used some spare felt as well as some unused old furniture from my collection!

And my Redwood Red Panadas! Nothing fancy, just some old leftover faux grass from my old school project!

A few weeks back, I found is lovely model of a diecast Vespa on sale at the department store I was working at. Knowing me, being a sucker for anything miniature, I decided to get it! And after a few days of painting, crafting out, this is the complete result!

Mrs Meadows isn't pleased that her husband, spends all his time now on his new Vespa!

And now, its competition time! I have a Spare Display Case to give away! All you have to do is to email me telling me when kind of Sylvanian Diorama you would like to make! This competition is open to all readers of Sylvanianholics, both local and international! So Hurry! Contest ends 21th April 2012, 11.59pm SGT!
